Higher Education PhotographerI photographed Robert Darnton, the Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and University Librarian, in the Loker Reading room at Harvard University’s Widener Library in Cambridge last month for LeMonde Magazine. The story was about the digitization of traditional printed books. Harvard digitizes an incredible amount of books in the basement of the Widner.

I have used the exterior of the library with its many stairs rising to huge columns before as a backdrop for photo shoots but I have never been inside. Once we passed security we had 30 minutes total to set-up and shoot. The interior was of course beautiful as Harvard is but I was amazed to see how large the reading room actually was. It reminded me of Grand Central Terminal with its expansive stone walls and ornate ceiling. It was a real treat to see.
