Classical Guitarist Eliot Fisk for the New York Times

Classical guitarist Eliot Fisk photographed at the New England Conservatory in Boston for a story in the New York Times. During our session Mr. Fisk played the guitar almost the entire time. It was a real treat to hear him play pieces such as Bach’s Cello Suite adapted for guitar.

Corporate Clip- Sustainable Forestry Initiative

I enjoyed working on the Sustainable Forestry Initiative‘s new website and marketing photography last fall during their annual convention in Burlington, VT. The subjects which included the company CEO and President, a board member and other members of SFI were photographed against a white seamless. I used a Profoto D4 generator with a Calumet large softbox as the main light, a Profoto 7′ Silver Giant Reflector as fill placed behind me and two Chimera medium strip boxes for kickers placed at 45 degree angles behind the subject to their left and right. Below are two samples from their website’s homepage and a secondary page.

New York Times Magazine Clip- SlutWalk Boston

One phrase I thought unlikely for me to ever say in my life was definitely “The SlutWalk went great!” And that is what I told my photo editor at the New York Times Magazine in May when after I had the pleasure of photographing SlutWalk 2011 at the Boston Commons for the publication. The SlutWalk was born out of an event that happened in Toronto when a cop told some scantily clad women that they were asking for trouble by the way they were dressed. This started an international call to defend “slut pride.” It was a very interesting event to photograph filled with emotion and no lack of visually interesting outfit choices.

Smithsonian Magazine Clip- How to Trademark a Fruit

Magazine Editorial Photographer Boston

I photographed a story in the July issue of Smithsonian Magazine about efforts in the mid-19th century to trademark fruit by horticulturalist Charles Hovey. He used artists to create drawings of the fruit as a document to identify different varieties and bound them in a multi-volume book called The Fruits of America. The story is a very interesting example of early intellectual property.

Hovey was also a three year president of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. The MHS, which is located currently at Elm Bank in Wellesley, MA, was where these photos were made. The reservation also happens to be one of my family’s favorite places to picnic. I highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

The Reinvention of Silk- New York Times Science Section

I illustrated a very interesting story for the New York Times Science Section about the reinvention of silk. A team of researchers at Tufts University is working on new uses for silk from silk worms including metamaterial antennas that can monitor health and the freshness of produce and substrate for proteins that hopefully will be used to regrow bone and other medical applications.
